The Paradox of Summer

Well, summer is in full bloom, & I seem to forget each year how busy it can get. Don’t get me wrong — I love being on the move & going out every day. However, sometimes you need to feel the sun rays on your skin, breathe in the warm air, and take in the small details — a time with no purpose, if you may.

There is such a contrast between the busyness of summer & the quiet moments that make it feel memorable. Where I live, the idea of summer feels so fleeting. People count the days before it starts, & they don’t stop until we see the first red leaves on the trees. It has been a challenge to balance both — to do it all before it slips through our fingers.

I don’t have any resolution for this observation, but I do wonder why summer gets the special treatment. Well, I do know that the warmth helps, obviously, but I realized that it often leaves us with a feeling of dissatisfaction at the end — that somehow, we didn’t enjoy it enough.

Maybe that is the paradox of summer: it feels precious because it is short, so we try to maximize every moment, and in doing so, we sometimes forget to truly experience it. Perhaps this is not just a summer feeling, but a very human one — the desire to hold onto something beautiful while knowing it will eventually pass. We mistake experiencing something for consuming everything it offers.
